In the category preferred by digital nomads—professionals who work remotely without a permanent residence — Rio ranks first, ahead of Bangkok, Thailand, and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Factors such as average temperature, internet quality, and living costs were decisive for this outcome. Cristiano Borges, curator of the electronic magazine, elaborated on the compilation process. — The magazine includes publications that are prominent in the sector and use recognized consultancies. In the case of the destination for nomads, the study identifying Rio as the world leader analyzed factors such as cost of stay and living, average temperature, internet speed, and even safety. Rio came first, with a low cost of living from a foreign perspective, pleasant average temperature, and good internet quality — explained Cristiano Borges, curator of the publications and an Embratur official. The entry of digital nomads into Brazil was regulated in 2022. Since then, there has been a specific visa for these professionals: temporary, allowing up to one year of residence in the country, in addition to offering discounts at hotels accredited with the city government. Traveling with his wife and a two-year-old daughter, Gon?alo Hall has been living in Barra da Tijuca, in Rio's West Zone, since December. Originally from Portugal, he is an entrepreneur at Nomad X, a consultancy focused on professionals who, like him, have chosen this lifestyle around the world. — This time we chose Barra da Tijuca as the place to stay. We are a family, and because it has a gated community and a community for our baby, we thought it was the best place for now. We have loved staying here. We've also stayed in Lapa and Laranjeiras, but I didn't love it — shared the businessman. The news comes during a week when the city of Rio becomes a gathering point for those who have adopted the world as their office, balancing tourism with remote work. This Wednesday and Thursday, Rio hosts The Nomad World (TNW), an event organized by the international community of these professionals with the support of the Municipal Tourism Secretariat (SMTUR-RIO). You can have professional productivity and activities outside of work with new and old friends at the same time - she said, considering herself a global citizen. — I was born in Germany, lived in Malta for four years, have a house in Vienna, but I truly live around the world all the time. Approximately 300 participants have confirmed their attendance, 25% of whom are Brazilian. Over two days, the conference promotes debates on the future of digital nomadism, taking place at Maravalley, an innovation and education hub at Porto Maravilha. The discussions range from entrepreneurship to artificial intelligence and the future of remote work. — We are continuing the project to position Rio as the first digital nomad hub in South America, presenting the Cidade Maravilhosa as the most desired and prepared to welcome this audience. The concept is to experience Rio as a nomad for a week, and intensely — explained Daniela Maia, the municipal secretary of tourism, who participated in the opening event. One reason Rio is preferred by different audiences in Brazil and worldwide is the city's well-established tourism operation, according to Fábio Montanheiro, Embratur's data manager, who coordinates the research for the "Tourism Trends" magazine. — Rio is a city that has been in the international tourist's imagination for many decades.
