Teva has been voted the best vegetarian restaurant in the city by the 2025 Rio Show Gastronomy Awards. More than just a healthy-eating restaurant, it is a place where nothing served — at the Ipanema and Copacabana locations — contains harmful ingredients. No pesticides, trans or saturated fats, white sugar, or ultra-processed foods make it to the table. It is also one of the few fully vegan restaurants in Rio, under the strict guidance of chef Daniel Biron. At the Copacabana branch, Biron oversees a larger space that also functions as a deli, with shelves of natural products and even a line of house-made cakes. On the menu, salads like the vegan Caesar, made with dehydrated mushrooms, house yogurt dressing, and sourdough croutons (R$ 56), share space with heartier dishes such as the croque monsieur on house brioche, stuffed with smoked tofu, cashew béchamel, and plant-based mozzarella and parmesan (R$ 48). In Ipanema, the chef has incorporated Amazonian flavors: cassava fritters with jackfruit in tucupi and jambu, served with guava and cumari pepper sauce (R$ 50); and breaded tofu with vatapá (R$ 84), made with homemade coconut milk, shiitake, and peppers, accompanied by grilled okra, coconut jasmine rice, and banana farofa with herbs and nuts. Among the classics are tempeh kebab with quinoa (R$ 84) and spicy ramen with miso dashi, tofu, broccoli, shiitake, edamame, seaweed, and nori (R$ 88). After stints at Galeria River in Arpoador and Be+Co in Botafogo, it moved to the beautiful mansion that used to house Reduto — a cultural space managed by Marco Nanini and Fernando Libonati — bringing its colorful and flavorful dishes. By popular demand, the baby chili (R$39), served with crispy corn tortilla, pico de gallo, and sour cream, has returned to the menu. Great options for sharing include the zucchini balls with goat cheese (R$39 for four pieces) and the ever-popular burrata no 2 (R$88), which arrives under hot olive oil with onions, capers, roasted garlic, lemon zest, and basil. One of the most requested dishes is the 100% vegan Thai curry (R$76, pictured), featuring crunchy vegetables, mushrooms, and coconut milk, served with basmati rice and sesame farofa. From starters to desserts, there are about 20 creations. Among the desserts, the tapioca with coconut milk, passion fruit sauce, and peanut crumbs (R$36) stands out. Mon to Sat, from 9 a.m. to 9:45 p.m. NATURALIE It's been almost a decade since chef Nathalie Passos laid the foundation of this "vegetable restaurant," aiming to demystify meat-free cuisine, as highlighted on the menu. Some of the recipes change with the seasonality of ingredients, but the classics remain constant. Noteworthy among the starters is the falafel portion (R$41.90 for five units), served on eggplant and beet babaganoush, resulting in an "Instagrammable" pink hue — judging by the number of diners snapping photos of the dish. Another great sharing option is the Asian cauliflower (R$41.90), breaded and accompanied by a slightly spicy sweet-and-sour sauce. In the main courses, the chickpea Indian stew (R$62.90), with sweet potatoes, coconut milk, tomato sauce, spices, and cilantro, served with coconut rice and chapati bread, is a highlight, as is the vegan feijoada (R$62.90), prepared with red beans, pumpkin, and smoked tofu, accompanied by whole grain flaxseed rice, sautéed kale, and corn and carrot farofa. There are also set meal options for R$65.90. For a sweet ending, try the vegan almond brownie (R$35.90), rich in chocolate with a nuts and cashew nut sauce. Mon to Sat, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. PRANA Operating for just over a decade, the restaurant — which moved in 2017 from a small space in Cosme Velho to a three-story building in Jardim Botanico — brings new items to the menu. The highlight is the eggplant parmesan steak (R$53), served with lemon-zucchini risotto and grilled zucchini with lemon pepper. It's described by one of the attendants as a "heartwarming dish." Among the popular starters are the black-eyed pea acarajé filled with palm heart vatapá (R$30) and the portion of mushroom hot rolls with cashew sour cream (R$41 for ten units). The menu also offers five vegetarian burger versions, such as the smash jack (R$45, with fries), made with smoked mushrooms, cheese, vegan billy jack sauce, American lettuce, and pickled maxixe. At night, from Monday to Saturday, the restaurant operates only for delivery, offering rectangular, individual pizzas (starting at R$34) or larger ones for sharing (starting at R$63). "It's like being out of the city," boasts chef Jam Carvalho, who runs the kitchen alongside his wife, chef Thina Izidoro. Animal-based ingredients are absent from the menu. Among the popular starters are the mushroom ceviche with mango (R$26) and the portion of quinoa croquettes with ora-pro-nóbis (R$26). Among the main courses, options include the feijoada (R$58), made with shiitake, fresh and smoked tofu, accompanied by rice, crispy farofa with onion and parsley, and sautéed kale in garlic.
